Conservation of Wetlands

There are about 100 million acres of wetland in the United States. That sounds like a lot, doesn't it? But it is not nearly as much as there used to be. There used to be more than 200 million acres of wetlands. People didn't realize how much animal and plant life they were killing when they destroyed the wetlands. Farmers took water from them because they needed fresh water to water their crops and they couldn't get fresh water from sounds or oceans. So the water was drained out of many wetlands. Some wetlands were drained and filled in to make farmland or for commercial and residential use. Others were destroyed by pollution.

Today there are many laws and regulations to help save our wetlands. There are also many organizations working to protect, preserve and restore wetlands throughout the world.
