Skateboard. U.S.A. 1962
Skateboard, U.S.A. The earliest skateboards were simply planks nailed to roller skates, so little is known of their origins. By the mid-1960s, Californian surfers were building better boards using plywood, and around 1962, the first commercial skateboards went on sale. In 1973, U.S. surfer John Nasworthy's addition of polyurethane wheels, which were fast, silent, and shatterproof, turned skateboarding into a national craze.
