Werner von Braun, Germany. The first rocket-propelled missile was the surface-to-surface V-2 "Vengeance Weapon" launched as a war weapon from Germany in 3942. Rocket scientist von Braun was in charge of the team that developed it. The rocket was especially frightening because it dived tooward its target faster than the speed of sound: people heard its screaming descent only after its explosion
