St. Nicholas Day is celebrated on December 6. St. Nicholas was born in Patara, Turkey. He was born in the year 271 A. D. St. Nicholas died on December sixth 342 A. D. St. Nicholas protected the weak against the strong and the rich. He was also known as Nicholas of Myra or Nicholas of Bari. St. Nicholas Day is one of the four major holidays in Germany. St. Nicholas is like Santa Claus. Actually, St. Nicholas is the original name for Santa Claus. Children put boots on their windowsills, so that St. Nicholas will fill their boots with candy. You must fill your boots with hay for St. Nicholas’s horse. St. Nicholas fills your boots or bags with treats. He walks in the door after supper, when the children are asleep. St. Nicholas carries a big bag of treats to every house. Sometimes a man with a darkened face will enter your house. His name is Ruppert and he travels with St. Nicholas. St. Nicholas asks if you were good this year and what you want to do in the future. If he likes your answer, he will give you treats. If he doesn’t like your answer, he won’t give you treats. If you were good, you’ll get  chocolates, fruit, and sweet meats. If you were bad, you’ll get coal, potatoes, onions, and Devil toys. If a person gave a great answer, he promises that he’ll give them a present for Christmas.
