Holidays, such as St. Lucias Day is a winter holiday celebrated in European countries. St. Lucias is on December the thirteenth. St. Lucia is the patron of light. Girls dress up in white robes, a red sash, and with wreaths of flowers on their heads. In some European schools, you might celebrate in school with a parade, and one lucky girl would be St. Lucia at the front of the parade. Children also sing a song called "Sancta Lucia." The Lucia crown is made of seven candles. Each candle is five and one-half inch and inserted into a circle of evergreens. The candles are a symbol of a halo, and evergreens stand for a new life during winter. You may eat gingerbread men and lussekats, pastry with raisins. Lussekats, a pastry, come in many different shapes. The most popular shape is called lussekatter or lucia katts. Gingerbread cookies are an important part of another winter holiday celebrated in Europe, St. Nicholas Day. By: Caitlin, sixth grade |
