What is Tap?
Tap is a form a dance that involves lots of footwork. When you tap dance you keep rhythmic patterns on your feet. Tap dance is made up of a lot of steps combined. The main technique is to have a separation of the foot. Tap dance is not all footwork, it has arm work, too.
What you wear in Tap
You can wear black pants or shorts not baggy but not tight, you can wear any kind of shirt and you have to wear Tap shoes.
Here are some Basic Moves
At the Bar
At the bar we do toe wings, wings, and toe stands. We usually spend about 15-25 minutes at the bar.
Rhythmic Patterns
Tap Dancers keep rhythm on their feet like drums. Tap dancers' shoes are said to be two shoes and four taps. That means there are two shoes and four tappers.
Riverdance
Riverdance is a famous tap dance. It is very popular and it has fast footwork. Riverdance features Irish music and songs. This would be a great tap dance to see and maybe someday you would be able to perform it.
Using Tap Skills
Today, adults and children take tap dancing for fun and exercise. When you tap dance it helps build your muscle control, and rhythmic movement. Famous movie stars, singers, and athletic players take tap dance to improve their performance.
Learning to tap dance
When you take tap you usually take lessons at studios. When you first arrive at class you begin stretching exercises to warm up your muscles. Then you review what you did last week like the steps. After that you add new steps to your routine. Your teacher will listen for a good beat and a clean sound. Also your teacher will watch for proper leg, arm hand and foot positions.
