When a hurricane is approaching in a coastal location, you should evacuate to higher ground as soon as possible. The National Weather Service usually issues a hurricane watch when it is possible for the hurricane to make landfall within thirty-six hours. Then a hurricane warning is issued when landfall is likely within twelve to twenty-four hours.

Property owners in Hawaii can help themselves prepare for a hurricane by making their homes and buildings less vunerable to damage by hurricanes.
