Hurricanes are very rare events in the Hawaiian Islands. The first officially recognized hurricane in Hawaiian waters was Hurricane Hiki in August of 1950.Since 1950, five Hurricanes have caused serious damage in Hawaii. In 1957, Hurricane Nina produced record winds in Honolulu. Hurricane Dot caused damage to Kauai in 1959. Hurricane Estelle produced very high surf on Hawaii and Maui and floods on Oahu in 1986. An estimated damage of $234 million occured when Hurricane Iwa struck Kauai on November 23, 1982.
Video from the Hawaii Civil Defense-Permission Granted On September 11 of 1992, the destructive Hurricane Iniki struck the island of Kauai with sustained winds of up to 130 mph and caused over $2.3 billion in property damage. Even to this today, some of Kauai's buildings have not been restored since Hurricane Iniki.
