Many Cultures have tried to explain volcanoes with folk legends:

Pele, the Polynesian goddess of fire, was said to inhabit the craters of volcanoes. She appeared as a woman in Hawaiian village before an eruption. If she was treated well, the eruption would be minor. If she was treated poorly, the eruption would be violent!

Vulcan, the Roman god of fire, was said to be forging thunderbolts for Jupiter, spears for Mars, and arrows for Apollo in the craters of volcanoes.

Mt.Fuji was said to be home of the Japanese god Kunitokatche.
