History of Australia

The Aborigines were the only to inhabit when the Dutch explored parts of the continent in the 1620s. Most of Australia was left undisturbed until 1770, when Captain James Cook took formal possession of the eastern coast for Britain. The British arrived in 1788 and founded penal colonies in what became modern-day Sydney, Hobart, and Brisbane. Many of Australia's early settlers were convicts of soldier. Free settlements were established in Melbourne, Adelaide, and Perth Australia has been active with global politics.. With the discovery of gold in 1851, the number of free men immigrants to Australia increased rapidly. In1868, the practice of transporting convicts to Australia ceased. In 1901, the six colonies of agreed to federate as the commonwealth of Australia. Attempts in Western Australia to secede from the commonwealth of Australia in the1930s failed. Since World War II, Although Australia is a sovereign nation, it is a member of Britain's Commonwealth and officially recognizes Queen Elizabeth II as its monarch. However, as Australia increases it ties to Asia and Britain integrates with Europe, many Australians believe the interests of two nations are diverging. They are- now calling for a change to a republican system of government with an Australia head of state, which they believe would better represent the nation's independent outlook.
