A narcotic is a drug that relieves pain and slows the central nervous system of the body.  Some common side effects are constipation, nausea, and anxiety.  The chief narcotic drug is opium.  Narcotics numb your senses.  In small doses they have valuable medical use.  If you take a large dose you can go into a coma or even die.  Respitory depression occurs in newborns whose mothers have been given narcotics.
