At first, simple roller skate wheels were attached to two-by-fours. Slowly wheels "evolved", or changed from a hard steel ride to a "tooth jarring" clay ride, to finally, a smooth ride with urethane wheels. After urethane wheels were invented by Frank Nasworthy, skateboarding became popular again, since it was easier to skate.
