The word "Nitrogen" means, "giving rise to niter."  Niter is a substance rich in Nitrogen, and was discovered before Nitrogen was.

Nitrogen is the seventh element on the Periodic Table. Its symbol on the Periodic Table is "N". The atomic weight of Nitrogen is 14.0067. Nitrogen has some of the lowest freezing and melting temperatures. Nitrogen melts at negative 209.86 degrees Celsius, and boils at negative 195.8 degrees Celsius. Nitrogen has been nicknamed "The Lifeless Element", because it cannot support life of any kind. Nitrogen makes up more than ¾ of the air around us.
