Beverly Cleary

    Beverly Cleary was born on April 12, 1916 in McMinnville, Oregon. Her maiden name was Beverly Atlee Bunn.When she was young She lived on her fathers farm in Yamhill. Most of her life was spent in Portland, Oregon during the depression years.
    About two years later she transferred to the University of California, Berkeley. She met her husband, Clarence Cleary, here when she was in her junior year. Beverly studied to be a librarian at the University of Washington in Seattle.
    In 1940 Beverly married Clarence. The very next year Beverly Cleary published her first book titled Henry Huggins. Since then, she has written over 30 books and sold more than 10 million copies. Mrs. Cleary has won many awards, including the Laura Ingalls Wilder Award and the honorable Newberry Medal for Dear Mr. Henshaw.
