In this rather gory sci-fi book, veteran/high priced mercenary John Clay receives a letter from the government saying he
has been inducted into the army ... again. Despite his protests, he is sent to the jungle planet Ithavoll, where he must locate and
destroy an alien weapon hidden deep in the jungle.
John Blair describes every scene in detail; the characters and places seem real, and even the inventions of the future are
easy to understand. He has a strange humor that makes his books a good mix of both comedy and drama.
[He] punched the man hard with two knuckles in the solar plexus as he raised his hands to protect himself. As the man
doubled over, he swept his feet from under him with the side of his foot, then kicked one of the other two, who had begun to
rise, in the chin.
He grinned to himself, feeling the flush of battle exhilaration. Thickheaded strong-arm types were good, healthy close-in
combat partners, and he didnt have to feel any qualms about breaking a few bones.
This book is really good, but not appropriate for young children, since Mr. Blair uses gory detail to describe the battles.
It might be a great book for teenagers and adults.
