In the beginning of Laura's life, she moved from place to place all the time. They (Laura and her family) moved from the big woods to the wide praries and over the icy waters of the Mississippi.

They went from Missouri to Kansas to Wisconsin to Minnisota and they finally settles in De Smet South Dakota.

Since her father was a pioneer, and Laura wanted to be just like Pa, she called herself pioneer girl.
