Thomas Jefferson was our third president. He referred to the White House as a "splendid misery". On his list of accomplishments to be penned on his tomb stone he did not bother to list the White House as one of them. Jefferson had many substantial achievements. Purchasing the large piece of trans-Mississippi wilderness (Louisiana Purchase) was one of them.
