John Adams

John Adams was our second president. He spent most of his term dealing with infringements on American neutrality in an Anglo-French war. Although he succeeded in keeping the United States away from those conflicts, he lost most of his popularity. Many years later he observed: "No man who ever held the office of President would ever congratulate a friend on obtaining it."
