Grover Cleveland succeeded Chester Arthur as president when elected in 1884. He was the only president to serve non-consecutive terms. He lost to Benjamin Harrison in 1888 and was re-elected president in 1892, on the strength of his leadership in dealing with a national money crisis. After his second term, he became a Princeton University trustee.
