| New Orleans is considered the Birthplace of Jazz. Here it was played by African Americans and Creole Musicians. The first time we ever heard jazz was in New Orleans around 1895. After this time, jazz traveled up the Mississippi River to Memphis, St. Louis, and Chicago. |

| Jazz musicians found their way North after the clubs in Storyville, Louisiana were closed. When they made it to Chicago, jazz was happy again. Like jazz musicians everywhere, the jazz musicians of Chicago didn't make a lot of money. They had to get other jobs to make a living and make music on the side. |

| New York City made jazz richer in many ways. The piano was first used for jazz in New York City. This led to the development of Ragtime. New York was the center for the music publishing business around 1919. The City of New York had two pioneering jazz bands. Great Artists that performed regularly in New York include Fletch4er Henderson, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, and Clarence Williams. |
