Grey-Kangaroo
Kangaroos are found in Tasmania, Australia,
and New Guinea. They are herbivores (an animal that eats no meat.) Their
enemies are humans who kill kangaroos for their meat and hides. By the 20th century the
number of kangaroos left in Australia had gone up drasticly because their natural
predators were killed by farmers. Kangaroos jump on their powerful, hind legs to transport
themselves from point A to point B. Their long, strong tail is for balancing
themselves as they stand still. A kangaroos fur is soft and wooly often with stripes on
the back or head.Kangaroos have a stomach just like those of cattle or sheep. They
regurgitate the food they have eaten chew on it again and then swallow for a final
digestion. |

Red Kangaroo
The kangaroo is the world's largest
marsupial. The fully grown males are a good 2 meters tall, and the females are
called a "Blue Flyer" because of her blue-grey fur. Kangaroos are like
koalas: they're both nocturnal. Kangaroos eat various grasses and green
herbage. A single young is born at any time of the year. The young is called a
"joey." The joey continues to suckle until 12 months old and stays in it's
mother's pouch for 8 months. At 18 months of age, weaning occurs. The young
are minute in size. |
Kangaroos
live in mulga and mallee scrub grasslands of mainland Australia. They are no longer
in the wetter areas like eastern, northern, and southern Australia. |

Hi, my name is Kate! |
Kangaroos'
predators are dingoes, farmers, and drought. Dingoes kill kangaroos for their meat
and farmers shoot them because they eat the farmer's grass for the cattle. |

Yum, choco-bunnies my favorite!
|

Hey, not so fast I need to hide!
|
The Red
Kangaroo's closest relative is the Eastern -Grey kangaroo. There are two different
kinds of grey-kangaroos, the Eastern Grey, and the Western - Grey. |

Ready or not, here I come!
|
The kangaroos can
live to be up to 20 years old. |
| The species of
kangaroo was first seen by European settlers. They thought kangaroos were so unusual and
unique. The reasons some species have become extinct is because of the changes in
Australia, such as polution, changes in climate, etc. They can't stand the changes. |

Mom, I think I left my baseball glove in here.
|
Kangaroos are
macropods (marsupials with big feet.) |

When the European asked the Aborigine what the wonderful creatures were called The
replied "kangaroo," meaning I don't understand. The Europeans thought this
was the name, so they named it "kangaroo." |

All I need to do is rest!
|
Because of the way the Kangaroo's
legs and tail are shaped,it can't walk backwards very easily.
They rest in the shade during the day, but in the late afternoon and night, when it's much
cooler, they come out. |
