Gordy Sheer is a famous luge athlete. He is a winner of
an Olympic silver medal for luge. He and his teammate, Chris Thorpe, ended
a 34 year "drought" when the US did not win an Olympic medal for luge.
Gordy
and Chris started racing together in 1987. Gordy Sheer first wanted
to start learning luge by watching it on T.V. It took Gordy
and Chris 10 years to learn how to drive the sled, so they were not always perfect.
Gordy Sheer is from Croton-on-Hudson, New York. He and his
teammate train together in Lake Placid and live in a house together.
They hope some day to get a gold medal in the Olympics.
Their competitors think that Chris Thorpe and Gordy sheer are amazing, but are sometimes jealous. They always race down the track faster than everyone else.
Instead of being "stone faced," like some other athletes, they
like to say what they are going to do, and can talk about many different subjects
in about a short time. When they start to move in the luge track, they
say, "Don't choke" as kind of a good luck charm.
When you are going about 80 miles per hour, you have one-twentieth
of a second to slow down to prevent crashing. One
person is hard, but two people is an experience you won't forget.
