When and where was Mies van der Rohe born?

Maria Ludwig Michael Mies was born in 1886 in Aachen, Germany. He changed his name to Mies van der Rohe (which was his mother's surname) when he became an architect.

What made van der Rohe unique?

Mies van der Rohe designed buildings using both classical and simple forms. His early works showcased glass a lot, because he liked the look of glass. Glass, stone, water, and steel are frequently used in his work. He also used a lot of symmetry.

He paid a lot of attention to the details of his work. "God is in the details," he said.

He also liked to say, "I need to bring nature, man, and architecture together to design a good building."

What did this architect design?

Mies van der Rohe designed many buildings. In 1922, he designed the Eichstaedt House in Berlin, Germany. In 1928 van der Rohe designed the Fritz & Grete Tugendhat House in Czechoslovakia. In 1929 he designed a very interesting building called the Barcelona Pavilion in Spain.

In Chicago, van der Rohe designed many other buildings. For example, he designed the Lake Shore Drive Apartments that are simple steel and glass skyscrapers. Also, he designed the Campus of the Illinois Institute of Technology. Although we didn't write any reports about his buildings, C.F. Murphy Associates used a similar style while building the Daley Center.
