Makahiki by Ruthyann The Makahiki was a special holiday for the Hawaiians. The Makahiki season is one of the happiest ceremonies of the year. It begins only when they first observe the rising of the Pleiades over the eastern horizon at sunset. They only see the Pleiades in the month of October. When they celebrate they give thanks to Lono-Makua the god of peace, and the warroirs use that time to train for war, and even the chiefs have to train and go to war with their warriors. The people have to pay taxes first then they relax. The people do not only give thanks to Lono-Makua they also danced and played games. The unnecessary work that they do stops. |
