America Today

The way America is today in the year 2000 is very different from the way America was when it first became a nation. America has grown in many different ways. Some of these are technology, population, and how people live and act.

In America today, all children including girls have to go to some form of school by law. The schools children go to have different classrooms for each grade, and many kids work and type on computers each day. Also it is very likely to see a male teacher teaching in a class room. Today in schools, some teachers use over heads and televisions to teach students. Students also eat lunch at school in a cafeteria and can buy their lunch at the school, they don't go home to eat like they sometimes use to.

In most modern cities today, there are many sky scrapers. The cities have become polluted and crowded. You can hire people to build your house for you, and some people even have more than one houses. Houses are usually built right next to each other. They don't have much land or yard in between them. Most houses today, have running water and sewage systems. It is now not necessary to go to a well or river to get water.

In society today, slavery has been abolished. Women are treated more fairly and they can own land, vote, and run businesses. Though women have come this far, they still aren't paid as much as men if they do the same job, have the same skill, and work the same hours. Today to some people, marriage doesn't mean much, so many marriages end sooner. All races and religions work together, eat together, and learn together. Our society strives to make every one equal.

Technology has also come a very long way. E-mail and the internet are used for communication and business on a daily basis. Almost every home across America, has a telephone. Many people carry cell phones and pagers. New phones now use *69, a system that allows you to find our who called you last and caller ID, a display screen that displays the name and telephone number of the person calling. In many office buildings ,fax machines are used to transport documents and communicate quickly. Televisions, now use cable or their own satelite dishes to receive over 800 channels. Video Cassette Recorders and Digital video Displays allow families to watch big screen movies in their homes.

In space, we have many satellites that allow World wide communication, monitor air traffic, and helps us to defend our country. America astronauts use shuttles and rockets to explore the planets and Space. Robots and land rovers are often used to explore places in space that we can not go.

America today is very different from the way it was when our great nation began. In some ways, it changed for the better. In some ways, it has changed for the worst. What do you think?
