Pyramids

The finest pyramids are found in Giza which is in northern Egypt. Some pyramids are 900 feet high. The slaves that built the pyramids made tunnels in them to escape when they were finished with their work.

Why were pyramids built?

The Pyramids were built to protect the royal bodies of the King, Queen, and other important people. It also held the possessions of the owner. They were built with a pointed top because the Egyptians believed that that would help the souls to the "New World".

What are the parts of a pyramid?

The parts of a pyramid would be the entrance that splits so if you go one way you would come to a dead end and if you went the other way you would come to another fork in the passage. One way would take you to the Queen's chamber and the other takes you through the Grand Galley to the King's chambers. The King's tomb was bigger than the Queen's tomb. There was also an escape shaft. There was always a fake entrance and it would be easy to become trapped inside. The capstone, or the top point of the pyramid, was able to come off as an exit. The Ancient Egyptians used stone bricks to make the pyramid and limestone coating on it.

How were the pyramids built?

The site was picked on the west bank of the Nile River. People think that Egyptians probably used ramps that spiraled around the pyramid or one long ramp to get the bricks up to stack. The ramps were probably made of mud bricks. They would stack up more bricks on the ramp until they put on the peak. Every time a layer was put on they put on a polished casting which was made of limestone. Then they carved out the passages.
