Check Off Lists 
After you have selected the project right for you, use these check off list techniques to meet the criteria necessary to have the competitive edge.

        When preparing for your project read through the rules and
        regulations thoroughly.  That way you'll know what is expected of
        you.

        Make sure you note the registration date and the deadline dates.
        It's best to try and complete your project before the contest
        deadline.  That way you'll  have time for improvements or changes.

        Request a scoring form.  Here's one from National History Day
        Competitions, it will allow you to see what you'll be evaluated on:

Students receive a rating on a 6 point scale as judges evaluate their presentations on the day of the competition.  This contest is a live performance.  The students stand with their display boards and answer questions as the judges interview them on their topic.  Prior to the competition day, there is a deadline that must be met which involves a written "brief description" of their project.  This includes a bibliography.
