SALLY RIDE

On May 26,1951, Sally Ride was born in Encino,

California. In 1978 Sally Ride saw an opportunity to
become an astronaut. Out of 8,000 candidates, Ride
was one of the six women that was chosen to be an
astronaut. The rest were men. She was trained to be
an astronaut by NASA, the National Space Agency.
Doctor Ridešs first space flight was on the Challenger
in 1983, when she became the first American woman in
space. After the Challenger blew up in the 1980's,
Sally went to NASAšs headquarters in Washington D.C.
and made recommendations for NASAšs future. Sally
believed that most astronauts would not want to fly
again in case of another disaster. In the mid 1990's
after the first space station was built, NASA studied
more about Earth before making a mission to Mars.
People think eventually Sally Kirsten Ride will tell her
own story. I think Doctor Sally Ride is an example for
girls to look up to a well as boys.
