A Polish priest, named Nicholaus Copernicus, was determined to find
out if the theory of Aristarchus of Samos was true. This theory
challenged that of the Church, which taught that God created the Universe. Copernicus found out that the sun was in the center of the solar system.
Kepler found out that the earth circles the sun in an oval. Kepler also
found that the planets move faster when they are nearer to the sun.
Kepler began his career as a mathematician, and moved to Prague in
1600, where he worked with an astronomer named Tycho Brahe.
In 1633, Galileo disagreed with the church. Galileo published a book,
named Dialogue of the Two Great Systems of the World. The Church
imprisoned him in his home, for his heresy. Galileio used a homemade
telescope, and discovered four moons orbiting the planet Jupiter. He became convinced that the Sun was the center of the Universe. |
