The Hubble Space Telescope, was launched in 1990, to take
pictures of outer space. In 1993, NASA sent the space shuttle
Endeavor to replace a faulty mirror which was producing fuzzy
images, and installed corrective lenses in front of the faint object
camera. The cost for the repair bill was 1.5 billion dollars. In its
geosynchronous orbit over earth, the Hubble space telescope has
recorded pictures of dying stars and of new galaxies being born.
Hubble is controlled by 3 fine guidance sensors. Scientists from
the Goddard Space Flight Center send messages to control Hubble
by radio waves. Hubble is the size of a school bus and runs by
energy from 2 solar arrays and Nickel-Hydrogen batteries for use
during orbital night. Hubble is in a low Earth orbit 600 kilometers
above the earth, and has an orbital decay of 0.4 kilometers per
year.
