Prince Henry the Navigator

Prince Henry the Navigator was born in 1394. Henry was one of
three sonıs of his mother, Queen Philips of Lancaster, and his father
King Joao of Portugal.

Henry was most famous for sea expeditions around the cape of
Africa and the school of navigation he established. Henry also liked
trading a lot too. Henryıs youngest brother Dom Fernao was
captured and died in 1448 while he was in captivity. Henryıs other
brother, Duarte, died shortly after the death of Dom Fernao.
Henry was the Governor of Order of Christ from 1420 until his
death in 1460. Henry was a very scientific man, and was skilled in
the arts of navigation. Henryıs mother died when Henry was very
young.

Henry did not actually go on the voyages to discover new things.
Henry sent his pioneers to go on the voyages. Henry hoped to find
out more about expeditions of the sea. Henry wanted to find
valuable things like gold. In 1441 Henry sent out two of his
captains, Antam Goncalves and Nuno Tristao. They both set out to
Cape Bianco on the western part of Africa. The Portuguese crew
seized twelve black Africans to take back to Portugal. In about
ten years, thousands of black slaves had been transported to
Portugal. Henry died in
Sarges in 1460.
