Splendid Snowy Owls

        Habitat

The Snowy Owls or "Ookpicks" live in the Tundra away from grass and trees. They live on hills and rocks, so they can watch the land and make sure nothing is coming to hurt or harm them or their family. I don't see why they need to because if a predator came, their huge wings would spread apart and scare them away. I know it would scare me away! You will learn about the description of a Snowy Owl in the next section of my wonderful site.

        Appearance

The Snowy Owls may be cute from pictures, but they can be scary birds. The big scary animals are 2 feet tall! They have a wing span of 5 feet! They are very heavy owls. In fact, they are heavier then the great Horned Owl and they are both the same size!

        Eating Habits

Snowy owls eat a large variety of foods. They mostly eat small rodents, but they also eat lemmings, mice, shrews, and voles as well as hares, tarmigans, and small birds.

        Traveling Facts

Snowy owls don't have a formal migration with the seasons, but when the food supply drops, they go south to Louisiana and Georgia. They choose new homes that look like tundra: open fields, beaches, or airport fields for their temporary homes.
