There are many different kinds of volcanoes, such as

All volcanoes are made of gas and magma. Then why do they rise? Actually the earth's surface does not rise up. The magma turns into lava at the earth's surface. The lava cools to make a hill and this happens many times to form a hill or mountain shape.

Many areas have only one type of volcano. Antarctica, for instance, has only shield volcanoes. I do not know the exact reason for this. My hypothesis is that it has something to do with the climate of the area. If you know if this is true or false please share your thoughts on our Message Board.
