        Ammonite Fossil
Fossils tell us alot about life on the Earth millions of years ago. Some of the earliest fossils are 4 billion years old! Most fossils were formed from hard parts of animals, such as shells or bones. Sometimes fossilized footprints have been found. This website focuses on two types of fossils, vertebrate and invertebrate animals, and where to find them.

Fossils can be found all over the world and some types have been found in three different countries. Vertebrate fossils are usually composed of bones, teeth, or eggs. The dinosaurs that lived millions of years ago are the most well-known of these types of fossils. Most invertebrate fossils are found in shells, like an ammonite, but some insects have been found in amber. Amber is hardened tree sap.

Plants, on the other hand, have no hard parts such as shells or bones that can form fossils. Plants form traces instead of fossils. An example is a print of a leaf in an old stone.

If the animal or plant dies in a place that is very cold, they could be covered in ice, and preserved, like the Wooly Mammoth just found in Siberia. To learn more about this exciting discovery, go to the Discovery Channel website.
