Captain William Clark was born August 1, 1770. Clark came from a family of revolutionary war veterans. He learned about the wilderness from his older brother George. As Clark got older he grew to be over 6 feet tall. Most of the Indians must have been stunned by his flaming red hair. Throughout the expedition he filled his journals with spelling errors, and even some language that was difficult to understand.
Though Lewis was President Jefferson's choice to lead the journey, Lewis knew he would need someone to assist him. Immediately, Lewis sent a letter to Clark asking him to be co-captain of the expedition. Of course Clark said yes. On the journey Clark brought along his black servant, York. York was able to vote and participate in many of the things the others did, which was very unique in those days.
Clark wrote in his journal a few hours after they left Camp Wood, "Set out at 4oClock PM and proceeded on under a jentle brease up the Missouri." After the expedition was over, on January 5, 1808 Clark married Julia Hancookin Fincastle,Virginia.
