Click a heavenly body to go there! Welcome to Uranus, the 7th planet from the sun. The planet we are on was discovered in the year 1781 on March 13 by a man named William Hershel. If you don't like to wait for your birthday, you definitely wouldn't want to live here; it takes 84 years for Uranus to orbit the sun. This is because of two reason: 1-it's very far away from the sun, and 2-it only moves four and a half miles in a second. That may seem like a lot, but when you think about how big the Solar System is, that's nothing! As you probably already know, Earth's season's are caused by it's tilt. Uranus has that same sort of tilt, except it is MUCH larger. In fact, the tilt is so big, that the North Pole will go through fourty-two of darkness, as the South Pole will go through fourty-two years of sunlight! Uranus has an atmosphere mostly made of hydrogen, helium, and methane. The top layer is frozen gas, while the second layer is made up of a thick layer of poison and water. Some of the poisen is ammonia, In fact, it is the same type of ammonia we use to clean our houses today! Uranus has a few very faint rings that were discoved only about 40 years ago in 1977. Then, in 1986, the Voyager 2 found four more rings, making a total of thirteen rings. The funny thing about Uranus is that it rolls on it's side, like a ball. Scientists think that it does this because it was probably hit by a comet or a huge asteroid, which would have tilted its axis. Goodness, look at the time, we need to move on to Neptune, now that we've learned about.. URANUS!!! |
