Welcome to Horse Sports! Here is some information on some well known horse sports.
Racing is the first sport I will be talking about. I myself do not like this sport because the jockeyswhip the racehorses. This is a sport where there are jockeys on the horses. The horses are usually Thoroughbreds or Arabians. They are usually highstrung. At the start of the racetrack there is a starting gate. This is a gate which has small individual stalls for the horse and rider with doors in the front and back. Everyone has different strategies for winning. Some like to wait for a while before really speeding up. some like to get in the lead right away and stay there. Most jockeys whip their horses and I think that is mean. I can't influence other peoples' opinions.
Most modern horse sports originated in the practices of war. Show jumping is one of them. The system of "forward riding" over things was introduced to cavalry training by Italian Captain Federico Caprilli. It is now a very popular sport. I can see why. It is fun and exciting in a kind way. Show Jumping is a sport where the rider has to complete a course of jumps. These jumps can be different heights depending on the level. the jumps can be water jumps, verticals, parallel jumps, upright jumps, spread jumps, oxers, and more.
Dressage, like show jumping, is originated from practices of war. It comes from cavalry horse tests carried out by the armies of Europe in the 19th century. But the Greek general Xenophon first described a progression of training and defined specific movements. In dressage, the horse and rider are really a team. The rider commands the horse to do something with the tiniest signal and the horse does it. You can either barely or not tell that the rider has given those signals to the horse. It is a really interesting sport.
Endurance riding is also originated in cavalry practices. Its modern form is a really sophisticatedand specialized sport. Endurance riding is riding over long distances on a horse which can endure it. The horse and rider both need to be able to withstand hardship and stress. The horse needs to be able to run for a long time. In an endurance race, there are vet stops along the way where vets check the horses and the horse and riders can rest. The best long-distance horse are usually Arabians or Arabian part-breds. This is a hard but interesting sport.
