Colic: Horses have small stomachs so they can not vomit. Colic can be caused by different reasons like sudden change of the diet, being worked after feeding, etc. Sitting like a dog, rolling, lack of appetite, and looking towards flanks are some of the many symptoms of colic. Strangles: Strangles can last for many weeks and it is contagious, so you have to be careful. The horse will have thick and yellow nasal discharge and certain parts of the face will get hot and swollen. It will become hard for him to swallow and he may cough. Symptoms of strangles are high temperature, depression, and loss of appetite.
A horse owner should have a first aid box or medicine cabinet well equipped for any emergency your horse might have.It should contain:
-a thermometer
-wound closures
-surgical tape
-salt
-elastic support bandages for joints
-a clean cloth to put the equipment on
-antiseptic
-tincture of arnica for the bruises
-surgical spirit
-wound powder
-tweezers
-blunt-end scissors
-poultices- good for wounds and inflammations, plus poultice boot or materials for securing poultice

One other thing you should have is your vet's phone number. You
should only use these things in an emergency or if a vet tells
you to. You should always call a vet if the horses condition is
serious.
