CHOOSING THE RIGHT SIZE BIKE

FRAME

A bike has to be comfortable or it's not going to be safe. If it's not comfortable, it's going to be hard to adjust.

FRAME HEIGHT
If you want to check if the height is the right size for you, put your bike between your legs and straddle the bike. The bike seat will be behind you. Both your feet should touch the ground. It's safest if there are 1 to 3 inches of space between your body and the bike as you are straddling it. Sometimes parents want to buy a bike for kids to grow into because bikes are expensive, but bikes that are too big aren't safe.

The bike on the left is a little too small for our team member;
the bike on the right is just the right size for the girl.

FRAME LENGTH

If you have a pain when you ride your bike, it's probably because your frame is too long. Try moving your handlebars and seat closer together to shorten the length.

SEAT HEIGHT

Your seat has to be the right size or it could be very uncomfortable. If your seat is low, it could hurt your knees, but if it's too high, it will be hard to pedal. Try to raise or lower the seat so you feel comfortable.

HANDLEBARS

If you have already set your seat height, then set your handlebar height. Your handlebars need to be raised or lowered so your elbows are slightly bent.
