Our Atmosphere

Atmosphere is the layer of gases that surrounds the earth.    The atmosphere is split into five layers called  Troposphere, Stratosphere, Mesosphere, Thermosphere, and Exosphere. Clouds are located in the layer called the Troposphere. This is where we live and where our weather occurs.

This chart shows the layers of the atmosphere and how many kilometers high each is.

Atmosphere is important to us because we need it to breathe and to protect us from space debris.  When space debris comes off of a rocket it passes through the atmosphere and the friction of the debris falling through the layers of gas cause the object to get so hot, it actually burns up.   The atmosphere also protects us from some of the sun's ultraviolet rays.   To find out more about space debris link to SPACE JUNK.
