What is Remote Sensing?

Remote Sensing is the process of obtaining information about land, water, or an object.  The term Remote Sensing most often refers to the collection of data by instruments carried aboard aircraft or satellites.  Satellites can't take cameras up and send the film back to be developed so they use radio signals to send the images back to earth.  Remote Sensing instruments are usually used to survey, map, and monitor the resources of the earth.  There are many different types of Remote Sensing instruments. Satellites have proved extremely useful in the development of Remote Sensing systems.  In the year 1972 the US launched Landsat-1 the first in a series of satellites designed specifically for Remote Sensing.  Today Landsat 5 produces pictures of almost all of the Earth's surface every 16 days.  Each picture covers over 11,970 sq. km.
