Cy Young

jjjjjDenton True Young was born on March 29, 1867 in Gilmore, Ohio. When he left home, he was known as Dent. He soon became known as "Cy", as in "Cyclone", for his blinding fastball. Before long, National Sports Weekly recorded: "Young, new pitcher for the Cleveland ball club, is a big, strong country man who was a rail-splitter before he played ball. He is said to be speedier than Hutchinson and has a drop ball like a killer." On May 5th, in a game against the Philadelphia A's, he pitched his first perfect game, and didn't know it until outfielder Chick Stahl told him. Cy Young was elected into the Hall of Fame in 1937. For Cy Young's playing ability, there is an award named after him. The award is given annually to the best pitcher in each league. During his 22-year career he posted these numbers:
