Nolan Ryan

jjjjjNolan Ryan was born Lynn Nolan Ryan, Jr., on Januay 31, 1947 in Refugio, Texas. He was signed by the New York Mets at age 18 as a pitcher. He played for the New york Mets in 1966, 1968-71. He played for the California Angels from 1972-1979. He played for the Houston Astros from 1980-1988. He played for the Texas Rangers from 1989-1993. In all he played for 27 seasons, the most years played by anyone in baseball history.

jjjjjNolan Ryan has had the most strikeouts of any pitcher (5,714). He was nicknamed the Ryan Express. He was the first pitcher to strike out more than 5,000 batters. He holds the record for the most no-hitter games (7). He is the oldest pitcher ever to pitch a no hitter game--he was 44 years old in 199l. He pitched 26 games in a row in which he had 15 or more strikeouts. He struck out an average of 9.55 batters per nine innings pitched. He led the American League in strike outs for 9 years and the National League for 2 years. In spite of his success, he never received the Cy Young Award.

jjjjjHe was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame January 1, 1999. He received the second highest percentage of votes of anyone elcected to the Hall of Fame. Three teams have retired his jersey--California Angels, Texas Rangers, and the Houston Astros.
