Babe Ruth

jjjjjBabe Ruth was born George Herman Ruth, Jr., on February 6, 1985, in Baltimore, Maryland. "Babe" was the name given to him at the age of 19 when Jack Dunn, manager of the Orioles picked him to play. Another veteran coach said the first day, "Here comes another of Dunn's babes". Babe began his career as a left handed pitcher in 1914. He became a full time outfielder in 1919. He was sold to the New York Yankees in 1920 for a high price because of his hitting ability giving him the nickname "Sultan of the Swat". He played for the New York Yankees from 1920-1934. He played for the Boston Braves in 1935.

jjjjjIn 1920 he broke the American League record of 54 home runs. In 1927 he broke his own record with 60 home runs. This remained a league record until Henry Aaron broke it in 1974. He was baseball's first great slugger giving him the nickname "Busting Bambino". He is still the all time leader in slugging (.690). In all he had 714 home runs in his career (686 as a right fielder, 15 as a pitcher, and 13 as a first baseman) making hime the all time leader in home run percentages (8.5%). He is also the all time leader in walks (2056). Babe Ruth was one of the first five people elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1936. He received 95% of the votes. He died on August 16, 1948 in New York, New York.
