Pete Rose

(1963 - 1986)

jjjjjPete Rose was born Peter Edward Rose on April 14, 1941, in Cincinnati, Ohio.He signed with the Cincinnati Reds when he was 18 years old. He played for the Cincinnati Reds from 1963-78 and 1984-86. He played with the Phildelphia Phillies from 1979-80 and the Montreal Expos from 1984. Throughout his career he played many positions including first base, second base, third base, and outfield positions. From 1980 on he played first base only. He was nicknamed "Charlie Hustle" because he was so enthusiastic. He would even run to first base after being walked.

jjjjjRose set 34 Major and National League records. He hit 4,256 hits--more than anyone who ever played in the majors. In 1985, he broke Ty Cobb's record of 4,194 hits. He still holds this record. Rose also played more than 150 games a year in each of 17 seasons--an all-time record. He had a 44 game hitting streak in 1978. He had over 200 hits, a record that still stands. He managed the Cincinnati Reds from 1984-1989. For betting on baseball games, Rose received a lifetime suspension from baseball in 1989. He was denied admission into the Hall of Fame because of this.
