jjjjjCalvin Edwin Ripkin, Jr. was born on August 24, 1960 in Havre de Grace, Maryland. His nickname was Cal.jjjjjIn 1978 Cal signed a contract and began playing for the Baltimore Orioles. In 1982 Calvin was named American League Rookie of the Year, and lead Major League rookies in doubles, homers, RBI's, games, and at bats, as well as runs. In 1984 Cal set the record for most assists by a shortstop. In 1991 he went on to become the first player to win an MVP award, Major League Player of the Year award, All Star MVP award, and a Golden Glove, all in a single season.jjjjjCal Ripkin, Jr. holds the Major League record for the most consecutive games played. He played in a total of 2,632 consecutive games! That is 502 more games than the previous record, held by Lou Gehrig. Ripkin once said, " I want to be remembered as the ironman, a player who went out there and put it on the line every day. Iwant people to say they couldn't keep him out of the lineup." Cal Ripken Jr. is a player we will always remember!
