jjjjjMark McGwire was born on October 1, 1963 in Pomona, California. Before he was drafted into the Major Leagues, he played in college and set the PAC-10 Conference single season home run record with 32 home runs. He also played on the 1984 U.S. Olympic baseball team. Mark was drafted by the Oakland Athletics in the first round (10th overall) of the 1984 free-agent draft. Mark set a rookie record in 1987 for homeruns with 49. In 1998, Mark hit 70 homers, breaking Roger Maris' single season record by 9! Mark McGwire, known as Big Mac, was also one of only two players to have hit 60 or more homers in two seasons, but his career batting average is under 300. On a high note, he has over 500 career home runs. He also has a brother who played professional football!
