Christy Mathewson

jjjjjChristy Mathewson was born in Factoryville, PA in 1880. The New York Giants signed him in 1901. He was 6'1" tall and weighed 195 lbs. He was given the nickname "Big Sly" after New York City's most famous fire engine, which had the same name. In the 1905 World Series, Mathewson pitched three shutouts in six days and allowed only fourteen hits and one walk. Christy was one of the first five men ever elected into the Hall of Fame in 1936. He finished with a career average of .970 and only had fifty-six career errors in 642 games. In his pitching career, he threw 259 strikeouts and 12 shutouts. Mathewson had more triples in 1903 than some players have had their entire career. Christy Mathewson joined the Army during World War 1, and in 1925; Mathewson died due to tuberculosis caused by poison gases.
