jjjjjOn June 19, 1903, Henry Louise Gehrig was born in New York, New York. When he was a kid, he loved to play baseball, and later on, his practice payed off. He started to play first base for the Yankees in 1923. Lou got his nickname, "The Iron Horse", because he never missed a game. In 1927 and again in 1936 he was voted MVP of the American League. During a game on May 2, 1939, he felt very weak. On June 13, 1939, he found out that he had a disease. The name of the disease was Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (A.L.S.). The disease is now commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. At the time it was very rare. The disease affected the brain until it couldn't tell the muscles to move any more. As the disease became worse and worse, Gehrig still went to his games. On July 4, 1939, Lou Gehrig announced his retirement from baseball. In honor of Lou, they made had appreciation day for him on July 4,1939. On June 2, 1941 at 10:00 in Riverdale, New York , Henry Louise Gehrig died.
