Joe Di'Maggio

(1936 - 1951)

jjjjjJoe Di'Maggio, also known as "Joltin Joe", was born in Martinez, California on November 25, 1914. During his baseball career, he was 6'2" and weighed 190 lbs. He began his major league career as a centerfielder with the New York Yankees of the American League in 1936. Joe led the Yankees to nine World Series titles. Newspapers called Joe "The Player of All Time". In October of 1951, he played in his last World Series.

jjjjjIn 10 out of 13 seasons, DiMaggio had a .263 average or better, and ended his career with a .325 lifetime batting average. He remained with the Yankees until he retired in 1952. Di'Maggio was named Most Valuable Player of the American League three times. He led the league in batting in 1939 and 1948, homeruns in 1937 and 1948, and runs batted in 1941 and 1948. In 1955, he was elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame. Joe Di'Maggio died at the age of 84 on March 8, 1999, from lung cancer.
